§ 08Care
Keep wood with you longer
Oil-finished solid wood breathes and moves with the seasons. Caring for it is simple: wipe it, re-oil it when it looks dry, and keep it out of strong sun and standing water.
Seasons
One ring, one year of care
Written for temperate northern climates; in the tropics or the southern hemisphere, follow your local wet and dry seasons.
Spring
Air and wipe
The air turns humid and wood swells slightly. Keep rooms aired, dust with a dry cloth, and keep pieces away from damp windowsills.
Summer
Keep out of direct sun
Strong light speeds up color change. Avoid long hours in direct sun and keep pieces out of air-conditioning drafts.
Autumn
Check and re-oil
The air begins to dry. When the surface feels rough or looks paler, apply a thin coat of wax oil.
Winter
Away from heat
Heating makes the air very dry. Keep pieces away from radiators and stoves, and re-oil when they look dry.
§ 08.1Every day
Four good habits
Most of the time, this is all wood needs.
- 01
Wipe with a soft cloth
Use a dry or slightly damp soft cloth, then wipe dry.
- 02
Use a tray
Put a tray or coaster under glasses, vases and anything that may leave water marks.
- 03
Never soak
Keep wood out of the dishwasher and never leave it standing in water.
- 04
No harsh cleaners
Alcohol, bleach and strong cleaners damage the oil layer on the surface.
§ 08.2Re-oiling
Five steps to re-oil
Re-oil whenever the surface looks dry, pale or dull.
- 01
Clean
Wipe off dust and marks with a slightly damp soft cloth, then let it dry completely.
- 02
Sand lightly (optional)
For fine scratches, sand gently along the grain with fine sandpaper and wipe off the dust.
- 03
Apply thinly
Put a little wax oil on a soft cloth and spread it thinly along the grain.
- 04
Wipe off excess
After a short while, wipe the excess oil off with a clean cloth.
- 05
Let it dry
Leave it to dry somewhere airy before using it again.
§ 08.3Questions
Care questions
What should I do about white water marks?
Most are moisture in the top layer. Wipe dry and leave the piece somewhere airy; if the mark remains, apply a thin coat of wax oil.
Can fine scratches be repaired?
Yes. Sand gently along the grain with fine sandpaper, then re-oil as described above. For deeper damage, please contact us.
Is it normal for a new piece to smell?
Wax oil and the wood itself have a faint scent that fades after a few days somewhere airy.
Will the color change over time?
Yes. Walnut gradually lightens and warms, cherry gradually deepens; this is the natural aging of the wood.
